Fashion designer Antonio Patriarca for Milan's annual
La Settimana della Moda in February  designed an entire
collectionof formal and semi-formal wear for Spring using
fabric (linen, silk, cotton) that I hand painted. He got the idea
after an exhibit of my work in his showroom a few weeks
before.I'd left a couple of unstretched canvases there
and he asked me if he could cut one into a jacket.
Eventhough stitching together acrylic on gessoed canvas
had his sewing machines smoking, Antonio was not daunted!
I used a Pollock- like approach to painting the huge swathes
of fabric, which most of the time I felt I'd totally ruined.
Then Antonio and his brilliant seamstresses worked their
magic and truly amazed me with the results.
I even got interviewed by Il Corriere della Sera
and a full page photo of a model wearing
the silk kimono was published in Vera magazine.
Working with a designer was  so much fun,a dream come true.

Milan Artist Inspires “New Look”

 for London Optometrist Storefront

London – In a “visionary” mix of fine art and retail, London Optometrist David Burns and Milan-based painter Mary Crenshaw have collaborated on a unique storefront art installation in the D.H. Burns location in Tottenham at 830 High Road in London.

Crenshaw’s luminous work entitled Free Fall embodies the relevant qualities of his business that Burns believes will be inspirational for customers and passersby.

“People coming into or walking by the store will experience a real celebration of light, sight, and vision,” according to Burns.  “It is much more engaging than the predictable fashion eyewear photos on the walls.”

“The canvas was custom-painted for the central window of D.H.Burns and is painted on both front and back in order to be viewed from either side,” explains Crenshaw. Free Fall, installed during the month of November, features delicate red/gold leaves in flight against an English azure sky.

The artist is inspired by the rural surroundings of her small town home outside Milan in Northern Italy.  Crenshaw takes an abstract twist on clouds, plants, and leaves.  While remaining loosely figurative, her work is reminiscent of 1950’s abstract expressionists such as Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell.
